Evaluating Juicers: Hand-Operated Or Electric Powered?
A vegetable juicer or fruit juicer is a conical-shaped kitchen appliance used for squeezing, or extracting, liquid from various foods, specifically fruits and vegetables, for the purpose of drinking or adding flavor to other foods. The juicer is easy to use, however due to the possible risks involved, should be handled with care, caution, and expertise.
Two varieties of juicers exist - a manual, or hand-operated, version and an electrical model.
Manual/Hand-Held Juicer
Juicing involves putting fruit wedges or vegetable pieces cut side-down in the center of the juicer and then pressing down to squeeze the food item and moving it back and forth so the juice will run out of the rind and away from the pulp. The actual pulp and seeds are gathered along the sides of the juicer, and the peel is then discarded.
Electric Juicer
A power or electric juicer mechanically removes juice from fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc. A suitable operation involves putting the article of food within and pushing the button. The juicer then automatically squeezes juice out of the fruit or vegetable. As a result of its mechanical nature, power juicers are much more hazardous than hand-operated types, and so it is important that users be coached how to correctly use them.
Two types of power juicers are in the marketplace:
Centrifugal juicers - these contain a blade and sieve to separate juice and pulp from skins or outer shells or casings. Centrifugal juicers are unable to break fibres in food, therefore their use is reduced.
Masticating juicers - these "grind up" the entire piece of food before, or in order to, squeeze juice from the inside. Once the food becomes mangled, the juice naturally flows out. Masticating juicers can break fibers in food, so they have a significantly broader use as compared to centrifugal juicers.
By the way, electric juicers and blenders are different in performance and purpose. Electric (masticating) juicers have the ability to separate juice from fibers, whereas blenders, like centrifugal and manually operated juicers, cannot.
The concept is that since fast-moving mechanical parts of an electric juicer blow air into the food, creating greater and quicker oxidation to essential nutrients, electric juicers, especially those having variable rates of speed, are regarded as being of better quality than manual juicers. This has not been confirmed, although it is a popular belief.
