Knowing Dog First Aid Is More Than Merely Owning A First Aid Kit
You probably are familiar with the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are no better since they are incredibly inquisitive and have a habit of going places and getting into stuff that they shouldn't. While this doesn't always end badly, they in some cases do end up injuring themselves somehow so it's a smart move to be familiar with some dog first aid.
About the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she found a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and decided to play in it for awhile. By the time she came back to the house the burrs had managed to work their way firmly into areas on her face, her ears and her little behind.
It was after hours so the Vet was already closed and a trip to the animal hospital would certainly have been very expensive. So she had to endure my tearful yet laughing undertaking as I was able to one by one wiggle those burrs out of her hair as she resisted and yelped for upwards of two hours. They were matted so seriously and close to the skin that cutting them out was not an alternative.
A tranquilizer of some sort would have been perfect but I didn't have anything at all for her. Because there was no blood or real injury, taking a trip to the emergency hospital was not required ... that time.
That is a distressing yet entertaining story to share and hopefully an experience she has forgotten over time. It was also a trivial thing although painful and challenging for both of us. But it might have been worse.
As a conscientious dog owner you will need to know at least basic first aid for dogs so you can be prepared for more extreme emergencies. You will often be able to save on Vet charges for less serious problems like the one I had. But you may possibly find yourself in a situation where you need to help reduce your pet's pain or carry out life-saving actions until you can get to the Vet.
Having a dog first aid kit is positively a smart move but you also have to know how to take control of things in an actual emergency. Be sure you have phone numbers readily accessible for both your regular Vet as well as the closest emergency animal hospital. And become skilled at basic canine first aid on your own.
I've never been in a position where I needed to provide life-saving medical actions for my family dog and maybe you haven't needed to either. But would you know simply how much to do if faced with a life-threatening situation concerning your dog?
Dog House Building Plans Will Make A Creative Pet Home If you've ever watched "Underdog To Wonderdog" on Animal Planet then you know how elaborate dog houses CAN be. But everyone knows that you don't really need anything like that for your dog ... but room for some customization and individuality is always welcome.
