New York's Times Square Is Without A Doubt One Of New York's Symbolic Images And Has Been A Witness To Numerous Important Events

Times Square, so named after the one-time head office of The New York Times. Located in the region of Manhattan, New York City, which centres on 42nd Street and Broadway. It forms the western part of the business area of Midtown Manhattan, New York.

The paper's operations were moved by Adolph S. Ochs, New York Times publisher, to a new tower on 42nd Street in the middle of the region known as Longacre Square. Ochs persuaded Mayor George B. McClellan Jr to develop a subway stop at the site and named it Times Square. Officiated by Mayor McClellan, the place was officially named Times Square on April 8, 1904.

In 1913, the paper moved out of the tower but remained in the neighbourhood. One Times Square tower, earlier known as the Allied Chemical Building, is the setting of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop which replaced the fireworks display of 1904 to 1906. It was December 31, 1907 when the ball, signifying New Year's Day was first dropped at Times Square and from that time the Square has been the site of the primary New Year's celebration in New York City. A minute of silence, and after that a recording of church bells pealing, took the place of the ball drop because of wartime blackout restrictions during World War II.

The millennium celebration in New York on December 31, 1999 is considered as the largest gathering in Times Square since August 1945. Celebrations marking the end of World War II generated reports of approximately two million individuals within Times Square.

Times Square quickly developed as a cultural centre containing theatres, music halls and luxurious hotels. However, the 1930s and the start of the Great Depression shifted the tone downward. Times Square became a district full of "peep shows", all-night motion picture houses, and outlets marketing cheap tourist commodities. It came to be considered a dangerous location.

Removal of 'red light' interests and increasing security in the area, paved the way for the opening of more tourist-friendly attractions. Such initiatives were encouraged by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in the mid-1990s. This restructuring began when the local authorities issued a sanction in opposition to the tight clustering of said businesses in the 42nd Street area. Several such shops closed or relocated to industrial areas in Brooklyn or Queens. These changes allowing for and encouraging more fashionable establishments to move in.

Broadway's theatres and the numerous animated neon and television-like billboards have made it amongst New York's symbolic images, contending with Las Vegas on the density of lighted signs.

In 1992, the Times Square Alliance, a partnership of businesses, started improving the quality of commerce and cleanliness in the district. At present, Times Square provides attractions such as a major TV studio for ABC, restaurants and a number of movie theatre complexes. It has become a destination for large financial, publishing, and media companies. A larger police visibility in Times Square has enhanced the safety. While the rejuvenated Times Square is undeniably safer and more pleasant, some criticise that the area has lost its spark and is now a thoroughly clean, "Disneyfied" version of its previous self.
